African Humanist Forum
From the 26th to the 29th of November 2008 in Nairobi, Kenya, the 2nd African Humanist Forum will take place, “The strength of diversity and non-violence”. The forum invites individuals, institutions, social, political and cultural organizations that share the ideal of non-violence and non-discrimination.
Active nonviolence is our tool of personal and social transformation and we share a basic humanist attitude that recognizes and affirms as fundamental values:
· The human being as the central value and preoccupation.
· The affirmation of the equality of all human beings.
· The recognition of personal and cultural diversity
· The tendency to develop knowledge beyond what is accepted as absolute truth
· The affirmation of the freedom of beliefs and ideas
· The repudiation of all forms of violence and discrimination
The Forum is programmed for three days of work by delegations from different countries to prepare a joint document and common positions on the subjects of the following thematic areas: Health, Education, Anti-discrimination, Economics, Culture and ethnicity, Peace and nonviolence: resolution of conflicts in a nonviolent way, Women in Africa and their role in the process of African integration, Ecology and the Environment, Religiosity and Spirituality, Youth and student movements, Housing and land distribution and Democracy. Apart from the working tables there will be a public event open for speeches, workshops, cultural activities and much more.
We, African humanists, have a great aspiration turned towards the future and which is daring to leave behind all traditional and dehumanizing models inherited from the last century that always contributed to the degradation of Africans, making them believe that they are less than nothing. Let´s open our future then!
